Greece: Rhodes

Greece: Rhodes continues

Wednesday we had a fairly leisurely morning and then ventured off to explore the Southern part of the island.
Our intended destination was Prasonissi...where the Aegean and Mediterranean Sea meet at the bottom of the island. We stopped along the way at a small local beach for a look.

Even though we had many navigators (in the passenger seat plus the back seat who tried to advise Eric on the best roads to take) we seemed to get a tad off course.  We arrived in a small village called Apolakkia....a village of only 200 people which sadly had been ravaged on the outskirts by a huge fire just over a week ago.

We back tracked after realising the error we had made on our drive and arrived at Prasonissi.

As we came around a corner and reached the crest of the hill, we were overwhelmed by the panorama of the colourful wind and kite surfers making the most of the breezy conditions. After venturing to the seaside and being amazed by the speed and colour of the the sails, we quenched our thirst and sated our appetites at one of the local restaurants. The food was great, the drinks refreshing and we learned a thing or two about giros(Yiros to us ignorant Australians) and their origins- not lamb or chicken but pork!! Yummy just the same!!

We stopped at a road side stand and purchased some melons...Sandy tried to bargain but the Greek vendor held firm with 50cents per kilo. Though he did pass on an extra little watermelon as well.

We passed through a quaint little Greek village called Kativa and meandered through the narrow streets exploring the past.

As we drove through Lahania we talked Eric (who was driving once again) to turn off at a roadside sign towards a beach...we were pleasantly surprised at where we ended up. This local establishment has been open 4 years and offers various settings to relax in and enjoy the pebbled seaside while enjoying some upbeat music.  It was extremely quirky colourful and engaging and we could have been in Mexico or Hawaii BUT we were in Greece!

After a wonderfully relaxing tour of the southern part of the Island of Rhodes, most of us relaxed in the pool with a drink but Eric toiled on with dinner. After some time over the stove and outdoor barbi, we were summoned to the table outside to sample the fare he had prepared- barbecued tasty sausages, hamburger patties and scrumptious lamb chops with Garlic potatoes in foil and a toss salad. We just started to eat when we were invaded by a swarm of pesky bees too many to swat away and so we finished our meal inside at the dining table.

Once we had cleared the table and Trish had packed the dishwasher, the games were produced and after much hilarity and vigorous discussion Annie won the 5 Seconds game, much to Sandy's displeasure!!!! There was dispute over some answers and questioning of decisions about acceptability.

We stayed up (except for Trish) to await the arrival of Tina and Jenny.

They arrived safe and sound from Australia via Singapore, Doha and Athens, were collected by a driver and safely transported to our villa.
