Italy: Amalfi
Annie was determined to check out our local Beach at Arienzo. Up early and 250+ steps later passing amazing flowers, villas and views, only to find access to the beach was closed. There was a derelict old resort amongst palms and even a couple of gum trees. Our host Giovanni later explained in broken English, Italian and French that the old resort is an archeological site and that Annie should have broken through the barricade to the beach as it was the restaurant owner's sign not an official one.
We awoke to a sumptuous breakfast as we emptied our fridge before we departed for Amalfi at 10.30am. With the power turned off for generator repairs, we needed to be resourceful for our coffee and toast. Giovanni assisted us with our luggage again down those challenging steps and we looked back for the last time.
Farewell to Villa La Roccia.....a fantastic place to have stayed while in Positano.
Rating: 8.5
Our driver from Positano Drivers collected us and we were off around the winding coast.......such beautiful scenery.
Squizz was in the front seat and helping navigate plus take photos.
After about 45mins and lots of traffic we arrived in Amalfi....we made contact with our accomodation host but ended up waiting a frustrating 60 mins trying to make further contact. Long saga but eventually James connected us with Simon who jumped in the van with us and took us up the hill to a tower....OMG....our apartments were in a tower overlooking the bay. Sandy queried quite passionately how many stairs we hsd to go up with all our luggage.....Simon stated only 40! Not all that happy as that had not been clear in the booking.....anyway we struggled up and eventually made it through the next door. Simon then told us we had another 5 stairs - ended up being more than 10!
Anyway we checked in and avoided being over charged an extra 100 Euros thanks to Sandy's diligence.
We then went back downstairs to the city centre (about 300 metres) vowing not to return till we were ready for bed.
Trish & Sandy wanted to send a few things home to Australia......about 90minutes later quite a few Euros lighter they joined Annie & Squizz in the local cafe by the bay.
Annie was keen to check in at the local tourist office re her walk for the following morning and a possible boat trip for us all. Despite the advertising in the website the office was shut all day. So we then found our way to the tourist sightseeing bus and headed out of town to Ravello....only 7kms away but a very windy road.
Upon return we headed to the town square and enjoyed being right in the midst of the town activity for a few hours..
Dinner was down by the water and then we made our way up the hill and up our 40plus stairs.....we all slept well.
